Anyone know of a good bet for temporary housing for my dog and I in the Bay Area?

I'm moving out to the Bay Area, will be going to school in San Rafael, Marin Co. The school only meets one weekend every two weeks, so I don't necessarily have to live around there. I'm just looking for a short term commitment place to live, which is relatively cheap, 400 to 800 per month, before I settle in and figure out something more permanent.. Of course there's Craig'slist.. I was just wondering if anyone out there had any experience in a similar situation, and might be able to share some advice. I'll be moving from Chicago at the beginning of September.. Have a medium sized dog, and don't feel the need to be in the city, as I'll be coming out one, and could use a break from that life.. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
