How can i give my guitar more of a funk sound?

Hey guys, i picked up a Fender Deep Impact punk b off of craigslist a while ago. The guitar has custom pickups. It sounds great, but it has one problem, and it's the fact it lacks a solid funk- jazz b sound. It's a solid, low- treble b sound perfect for punk, but i want a tangy, funky noise. Can i obtain this sound by changing the strings, or should i buy new pickups? Thanks!
