Hair care (softness)?

i want my hair to be softer. to me my hair feels kinda like straw to me at least and gets very curly when it is long. once it curls i cant get it to stay down. i would love to get it soft enough that it just kinda falls down and doesnt have the strengh to curl up. is there anything i can do about it?
